Dutch Courage

We take to the streets in the latest Burton roadster to come from the ever popular Dutch component car manufacturer. Based upon the ever quirky Citroën 2CV, and with bags of character, this is a kit we've long felt needed strong UK representation... which it now has. But does this best selling Continental kit have what it takes to find appeal on UK roads... well, there was only one way to find out!

Yes, our editor puts the newly UK-focussed RHD demonstrator through its paces on the road, and looked into the interesting options home builders have to create an intriguing convertible from either a second-hand 2CV or nearly new parts.

Pretender to the crown

There are few cooler Hollywood petrolhead names than Steve McQueen, and even fewer hero movie beach buggies than his immortal Thomas Crown Affair Meyers Manx. The ultimate mix of US component and custom car goodness, it's a car that demands movie star status... and one that has so far proved all-but impossible to recreate. Until now.

In this feature we take a look at the trials and tribulations UK specialist Kingfisher Kustoms worked through to create an absolutely accurate replica of one of McQueen’s most substantial movie builds.

With Chevrolet Corvair power and masses of correct fitments – alongside plenty of bespoke work to boot – this has to be the ultimate evocation of one of the most famous, yet least replicated, beach buggies in the world. If you’re into your custom projects, this feature is not to be missed.

Mojo Merge-R

The classic Mini has long been a darling of the restored and component car scenes, but rarely have the two mixed... that is until Patrick Horton decided to give his crusty Cooper a new lease of life using the basis of one of the all time kit car greats.

With a mid-mounted Honda VTEC at the rear, and a honed Sylva Mojo chassis beneath, this car has absolutely earned its Q-plate. However, its newfound powertrain and spaceframe structure also give this Issigonis-styled special the ability to embarrass most Goliaths on road and track too.

Adam Wilkins tells all on this 18-year epic build in issue two, while Patrick explains how a kit car retrofit can rejuvenate an unrestorable classic... this one certainly gave us plenty of food for thought.

Zastavabarth and Li'l Mostro

Two funky builds from the classic small Fiat scene, both of which aren't quite what they seem. This feature begins with the Zastava-based Abarth 850TC replica which has all the underpinnings to outrun the original... and just enough aftermarket Abarth parts to blur the lines between copy and the real thing.

If that's not your thing, Li'l Mostro is a Fiat 126 with a dirty German secret. Built upon a Volkswagen Beetle-derived dune buggy platform, this unsusual jacked-up classic is just the tonic to take on the current mainstream micro SUV trend.

It may also be a 'faux-by-four', but at least it has genuine ability when the going gets rough... and worse.
